Databases
With databases, we have reached what is probably the most-important resource and undoubtedly the deepest, darkest, back-end of the enterprize. They should remain unseen but ever alert and accessible only to those with the correct permissions.
We find that for many needs simple ASCII databases are the best solution – cheap, easy and shareable. PERL running on UNIX allows excellent querying, sorting, locking, etc.
At the next level of robustness, SQL (Windows) or mySQL (UNIX) is ideal for a huge range of websites. It offers stronger queries (naturally) and is appropriate across the enterprize.
A small proportion of (highly-visible and vocal) sites requires a top-end solution such as Oracle.

By the way, we didn't mention it, but naturally we have experience in legacy systems (eg, Access, FoxPro) and other SQL servers including InterBase, Sybase, Informix and DB2.
